Episode 20 - Knitting With Bamboo
A new episode delving into how bamboo needles are made. I review “The Friday Night Knitting Club” which I have listened to as an audiobook and also introduced a segment on a free pattern by Crystal Palace Yarns . If you are looking for it, a link to the Grayson E handbag by Muench Yarns can be found here.
The music from this episode was brought to you by the podsafe music network. The song was Variation of Bolero by theStark.

I am very anxious to start knitting the Central Park Hoodie. I have never done cables even though I have been knitting for 9 years.
HELLO! This is Laura. Just downloaded a couple of your podcasts on my new MP3 player and was astonished that I MIGHT be your first respondent. I am going to tackle denim yarn, which is a bit of a faith leap with the whole shrinking thing. I’m really going to do it, though. Planning on a rowan sweater and the ripple skirt both. Hmmm… just have to plan on blue hands for awhile. thanks for your scientific knitting! I’m loosethreads on ravelry, and still trying to get the hang of posting pics.
I really enjoyed your recent podcast. In answer to the question, “What’s next?” my answer is the following. I recently ordered Alice Starmore’s amazing book on Aran knitting and would like to knit one or more pieces from that. But I was also intrigued by the Harlot’s posts on the Kauni sweater, so that may be in the queue as well. I am easily inspired by what I see on the web, so this could all change in an instant!
I have to tell you that I LOVE your podcast. You are so informative and helpful. I love hearing about things from the ‘explained’ point of view. I like to know the ‘whys’ and ‘wherefores’ of things. Great job! keep it up!
Dear Miriam,
I particularly enjoyed your podcast this week. I have a preference for the knitting podcasts which discuss patterns, so your segment on that topic was appealing.
I knitted a top using Rowan Summer Tweed last year. I did not find it as unpleasant as you did, but I don’t plan to use it again. Also, I consider the appellation “Summer Tweed” to be a misnomer; the sleeveless top I made with it is too hot to wear in warm weather, and at what other time would I put on a sleeveless top? Someone suggested using it as a vest, but it would look stupid. Good luck with your project, but consider yourself warned about the warmth.
Cheers, Joni, a regular listener
Hi, Miriam. Thanks for excellent info on Bamboo needles. In answer to this podcast’s question: My big project for the year is designing my own aran sweater. I bought Janet Szabo’s book “Aran Sweater Design” as a Christmas Gift for myself, and it’s quite a pleasure to read. I’ve purchased my Sierra Aran yarn from Elann in the “Thistle” color and I’m ready to start swatching. Keep up the great work.
Hey!
I”m a big fan of the podcast. I love the science part, exploring the technicalities of knitting. It’s a chance for all of us to put our inner geek to good use.
As for what I’m excited about in 2008: socks. Original, I know. But they’re really portable, short projects with quick rewards and good for learning new techniques, and I know I can go into a yarn store, buy two skeins of sock yarn and at least make a pair. Most sock yarn is stash because you haven’t gotten to it yet, not because you have no idea what project to make with it!
In particular, I’m swatching right now for a pair of Arrrgyles from Moth Heaven, matching sets for hubby and me. He only gets a pair because he’s promised to show them off. He’s confident enough in his geekiness to do that.
