Episode 19 - What’s In The Coat?
This episode considers the various coatings on popular metal needles, especially the ever reliable Addi Turbo brand of needles. I lightly review the KnitPick’s Options set of needles and embark on resolutions to knit what the heart desires. For me it’s the Ram’s Horn Jacket from Knitting Nature. A story by my munchkin on numbers is a great segway from my musings about the most popular size of needle in my toolbox. What is yours? Let me know by emailing me at knitscience@gmail.com.

Hi Miriam, You are so lucky you received lots of knitting and podcasts goodies for Christmas. My Family still has not gotten the hint - that if they give me knitting stuff they can have more socks.
Well, maybe next year. Karabella 8 is my all time favorite yarn. My very first sweater was knit in that yarn and I loved working with, great stitch definition.
Happy belated birthday.

Miriam,
Thanks for all the research you do on knitting related topics. You have a unique voice among the knitting podcasts. One of my New Year’s goals is to take time and thank my favorite podcasters!
Take care, Sally
Hi, this was the first podcast I have listened to. I was so glad to hear you tonight. I was in an automobile wreck today, and although, I was not hurt, I was somewhat tramatized by the experience and the damage to my bright shiney Scion XB. It was my first new car, and now it looked really bad. So I am not able to sleep tonight and clicked on your podcast, which was a welcome distraction at 2:30 am. I liked learning more about the needles and I will use that information to my next needle purchase. I also would be very interested in hearing what equipment you use to be able to make this podcast which you somewhat mentioned when speaking about the new mircrophone your husband gave you. If you get a moment I would love to hear more. Thanks again for your service ! Happy New Year Liz
I’m a loose knitter… for aran/WW I reach for size 9s. For socks I reach for my 2.25mm fixed harmony circular.
Thanks for the excellent podcast! Sorry if i’m a little late on the question.
In answer to your question, I seem to like to use size 7 needles the best. This size needle and the accompanying yarn seem to knit up projects like sweaters at a good pace. I don’t like knitting with needles bigger than 11. I bought some Rowan Big Wool last year (and some size 19 needles). I was quite excited to finish the sweater quickly, but I discovered that using the big needles was a lot like using those gigantic crayons they gave us in kindergarten. I quit knitting the project for a while because it honestly made my hands hurt. I have rather small hands, so my experience in using these needles might be different from that of other folks.
Again, thanks for your hard work on the podcast. Your inquiries into the topics you look up help inspire me to do my own historical research on the knitting projects and styles I’m interested in tackling.
Thanks for the comparison on the needles. I didn’t know that the knit pics were the same coating as addi’s. I enjoy your podcast. Thanks! KC
