Episode 14 - Going To The Mattresses

Posted in Knitting by knitscience on September 2nd, 2007

The discussion focuses on the techniques for building a better seam. We focus on the mattress stitch and selvadge edges. A good tutorial on mattress weaving is one from knitty.com and also a tutorial by Dawn from The Virtual Sanity .

I also review the book by Nancy Bush, Knitting Vintage Socks , and focus on one particular pattern, the Madder Ribbed Sock since I have started a sock fancied around that pattern with Jawoll Aktion 2007 yarn. I mentioned two books for finishing:

1) Finishing Techniques For Hand Knitters by Sharon Brant. 2) The Knitter’s Book of Finishing Techqniques by Nancie Wiseman.

The song in this Episode is entitled “My Planet” by Lark Wiskey , courtesy of the podsafe music network.

just had to pop over and say - i really really enjoy your podcast - I have not caught up with all of the issues yet, still working my way thru - but what i have listened to is easy to listen to and interesting. I am an experienced knitter in New Zealand - home of flat chunky knitting, where I knit finer yarns, in the round and socks. I await with interest your developing sock prowess, following the large stash of sock yarns and books you’ve bought.

I also love you accent - I work with a Bibianna who was born in South America and you sound similar - not the same but similar. for me - very easy to listen to. Thank you you make my bus trip home more enjoyable.

Here’s another great resource for finishing methods. My seams have improved significantly by using her techniques. http://www.studioknits.com/booktoc.htm

Haven’t had another wonderful podcast in a while, so just in case you need some more encouragement I thought I’d let you know again how much I enjoy listening and that I think all the subjects you cover are very handy. I hope you are well and happy :)

Hello: Thoroughly enjoyed this topic, because I am nearing the end of making the pieces for a sweater. It’s been a few years since I’ve put one together; your podcast comes just in time. Maybe my sweater will be so neatly constructed, I can wear it inside out!!!
