Figuring out the fit of a knitted garment can drive you mad. I have spent many months knitting a sweater only to find in the last stretch that the fit is not quite what I imagined when I started. There is help out there to help you alter the pattern. The Spring/Summer 2007 edition of Knit It! Magazine has a great article by Deborah Newton. Check out the magazine in your closest craft store. Also we discuss in this episode science news. An article on using knitted articles to depict three-dimensional objects is fascinating. Get it at Science News Online.

The music of this show is courtesy of the podsafe music network. The band is Audrey Come Lately.

Keep letting me know how you journal your knitting, if at all. And if you don’t – tell me why not (if you know why).

The next episode will focus on Spring fashion and “reverse engineering.” Stay tuned…

Happy Knitting!

The last 6 minutes or so of your podcast are just dead air. You get cut off talking about going into the wool department in London. I download from iTunes if that makes a difference. Great show until then though. ;-)

I love your podcast but the music is driving me away. To hear you talk I have to put the sound up and then when the music starts, it BLASTS!! Since I am listening at work on my computer that is Not a good thing.

I am writing from London. Came across your podcast after a search for Deborah Newton. I have her book - it is an old classic in my library - and I was wondering if she had any NEW books/patterns out. Interesting about the Knit It mag.

I’m enjoying your podcast as well, but agree with Kathy that the levels need some work. I listen to podcasts while I drive to work and have to turn up the volume quite a bit (too much really) to hear you speak and then turn it down when the music plays. It would be better if your vocal level was on par with the level of the music.

I must say, it’s refreshing and a little amusing to hear that you’re just as exact with your knitting as I am! I have a reputation in my knitting groups for being–hmmm… how should I say this… a knitpicker? I didn’t used to purchase yarn without having a project in mind (although in the past year my approach has changed and now I have a stash), and still get anxious if I have too many projects in progress at the same time. Recently that number was 5. http://knitflix.blogspot.com/2007/03/wips-are-out-of-control.html

However, I did something that you were not willing to do–I ripped out a sweater when it was past the point of no return. The sweater was finished. It was sewn together, ends woven in, wearable, finished. I wore it 2 or 3 times and just didn’t like the fit. It sat in my closet for a good long time and I knew I wouldn’t wear it again. So one day I decided to rip it out and reknit it. That’s painful enough, but what made it worse is it was constructed of modular diamonds which were knit diagonally on the front and back of the garment, so there were at least 2 ends per diagonal. That also meant I had many little balls of yarn to keep track of because of course each diagonal was a different length.

To make a long story short, I reknit the sweater and now it’s wearable. I was able to save a garment from a certain fate of being donated to Goodwill. It was a chore, but I’m really glad I did it.

If you’re interested in photos and the story of the reknitted sweater, take a look at these blog posts: http://knitflix.blogspot.com/2006/08/vk-diamond-pullover-take-2.html http://knitflix.blogspot.com/2006/08/look-before-you-leap.html http://knitflix.blogspot.com/2007/03/2007-03-vogue-diamond-pullover-reprise.html

    Cheers!
